This small shunting layout is complete without the need for a backscene, as all the shunting is carried out on view. With only one or two small shunting locos, wagons can be shunted around between the three platforms – using the card sorting game to define an order and destination. Uncoupling ramps and electrically-operated points would mean that operation is almost seamless, and freight wagons carrying ballast or coal would provide the rolling stock.
