Shunting operations typical to docksides across the country in years gone by make this an ideal prototype for a micro-layout. In addition, the cluttered nature of most ports mean that a range of industrial junk can be scattered across the ground - try and find photos of real docks to make this as accurate as possible. Warehouses used for whisky or fish traffic make for a steady supply of wagons and train movements.
